How to choose the right deck sailing hardware
Sailing hardware includes a wide range of mechanical components that control the movement of the sails and running rigging. Choosing the wrong component can compromise performance or cause failure under load: it is worth paying attention to a few key parameters.
Rope diameter: the first selection criterion
Every block, cam cleat, or fairlead is sized for a range of rope diameters. The most common sizes range from 5 mm to 12 mm, with 8 mm and 10 mm being among the most widely used. Checking the diameter of your halyards and sheets before purchasing is the quickest way to rule out incompatible components.
Block type: fixed, swivel, or with a fairlead
The fixed block is suitable where the direction of the load is constant. The swivel block allows the rope to be redirected at varying angles, useful for cockpit fairleads or jib sheets. Blocks with a fairlead allow the rope to be inserted from the side without having to thread the end through: practical for lines that are changed frequently. Two- or three-pulley blocks (double, triple) are used where mechanical advantage is required.
Number of pulleys and working load
Single blocks are the standard solution for simple fairleads. Double and triple blocks increase the mechanical advantage in trimming maneuvers. Always check the breaking load stated by the manufacturer and apply an appropriate safety factor relative to the actual forces on board.
Cam cleats and clamcleats: how they secure the rope
Lightweight alloy cam cleats secure the rope with one hand, freeing the crew from prolonged effort. Clamcleats use a toothed system that holds the rope by friction and is released by pulling upwards. The choice between the two depends on the type of maneuver, the frequency of adjustment, and the position on deck. Brands such as Clamcleat and Easylock offer specific solutions for different onboard needs.
Winches: handles and electric conversion
Winch handles are available in different lengths and in a floating version, a useful feature in offshore sailing. For Lewmar winches, electric conversion electronics are also available. Choosing the handle compatible with your winch head is essential to prevent slipping under load.
