To help you choose: sealants are selected based on the surface and type of joint, while for panels, thickness and finish are the key factors.
How to choose sealants and DIY materials for campervans
Campervan maintenance requires specific products: vibration, temperature fluctuations, and exposure to the elements make standard construction sealants unsuitable. The right choice depends on the type of joint, the surface, and the intended use.
Sealants: polyurethane or MS polymer
Polyurethane sealants, such as those in the Sikaflex range, are suitable for structural joints, bonding components subject to loads, and sealing roofs and walls. MS polymer sealants (such as Dekalin Dekasyl) offer good elasticity, adhesion to many substrates without primer, and UV resistance: they are often preferred for trim and profiles. Always check compatibility with the material to be sealed (fiberglass, aluminum, plastic, wood) before choosing a product.
Primers and surface preparation agents
On difficult surfaces such as glass, painted metals, or smooth plastics, using a dedicated primer—such as Sika Primer 206 G+P—or Sika Tooling Agent N for smoothing significantly improves adhesion and long-term durability. Do not skip this step on joints exposed to water.
Instant adhesives and threadlock
Loctite provides fast-acting cyanoacrylate adhesives and threadlock for screws and nuts subject to vibration: useful for maintaining furniture, accessories, and light mechanical components.
Fiberglass: roof or wall, format, and weight
Fiberglass panels and rolls differ by intended use (roof or cell wall), width, and the presence of a protective film. For roofs, products with a film and greater abrasion resistance are generally used; for interior walls, the choice depends on the desired aesthetic finish. The price is often per linear meter: calculate the area to be covered, allowing a small margin for waste.
Plywood panels: thickness and finish
Plywood for campervan fitting is available with a decorative finish (white, ivory, oak, embossed beige) or with HPL for greater moisture resistance. A thickness of 3 mm is suitable for cladding and lightweight paneling; thicknesses of 12 and 15 mm are used for worktops, cabinets, and load-bearing structures. Check the sheet dimensions against the required cuts.
