Camper heaters are divided into two main types: hot air, which directly heats the living area, and water-based, which also supply the hot water heater. The choice depends on the type of use (seasonal or extreme winter), the available energy source (diesel, LPG, or 220V), and the power required based on the vehicle's volume.

How to choose the right heater for your camper

A camper heater must ensure thermal comfort even in freezing outdoor temperatures, while consuming as little energy as possible and integrating with the vehicle's electrical and plumbing systems. The criteria that really matter are the type of heating, the energy source, the power, and compatibility with the existing system.

Hot air or water: two different systems

Air heaters (such as Eberspächer's Airtronic series, Webasto's Air Top, and Autoterm's Air) burn diesel and distribute hot air through ducts. They are compact, can be installed even in confined spaces, and heat the living area quickly. Water heaters (such as Autoterm Flow, Aqua-Hot, or Alde systems) heat the liquid circulating through the radiators and boiler: they are slower to reach full capacity but can also provide domestic hot water with a single appliance.

Energy source: diesel, gas, or 220V

Diesel models draw from the vehicle's fuel tank and are the most common choice for off-grid use. LPG models (such as some Truma solutions) connect to the camper's gas system and are common in vehicles already equipped for it. 220V electric heaters are suitable only at campsites with an external power connection: they consume a lot of electricity and do not work off-grid.

Power: how to choose

Power is measured in kW and should be chosen based on the living area's volume and the expected minimum temperatures. 2 kW models are suitable for vans and small campers used in spring and autumn; 4–5 kW models are suitable for larger vehicles or extended winter stays. Some models allow the power to be adjusted across multiple levels.

Supply voltage: 12V or 24V

Combustion heaters have an internal electric motor that requires power from the vehicle's battery. Light campers and vans use 12V systems; heavy vehicles and some large motorhomes use 24V. It is essential to check the vehicle's onboard system voltage before purchasing.

Complete kit or main unit only

Some products include the installation kit with an exhaust pipe, air intake, bracket, and control panel; others sell the main unit separately from spare parts and accessories. Those replacing an existing appliance can purchase only the heater body; those installing one for the first time need the complete kit. Specific spare parts (fan motors, control units, burners) can be found in the Climate and Heating Spare Parts category.

Domande frequenti
