How to choose a boiler, pumps and tanks for a motorhome

Boiler: capacity and power supply

The first parameter to define is the capacity in litres, which depends on the number of people on board and the intended use (only hand washing or also showering). The second is the power supply: motorhome boilers run on gas, 12V, 230V or with a heat exchanger connected to the heating circuit. Combination models allow you to use multiple sources depending on the situation. Truma and Pundmann are among the most sought-after brands; Alde, on the other hand, specialises in heat exchanger systems integrated into liquid heating systems.

Heat exchanger boiler: when it is worth it

A heat exchanger boiler uses the heat already produced by the heating or the engine to heat the water without additional energy consumption. It is the most efficient choice while driving or when the heating is already on. Check that the flow rate of the primary circuit is compatible with the chosen model.

Water pumps: flow rate and pressure

Motorhome pumps are chosen based on the flow rate (litres per minute), maximum pressure and supply voltage (almost always 12V). An adequate flow rate prevents pressure drops when using the tap and shower at the same time. Check the diameter of the fittings for integration into the existing system.

Tanks and level gauges

Freshwater and greywater tanks differ in shape, capacity and material. Before purchasing a replacement or additional tank, accurately measure the available space in the compartment and check the position of the connections. Sensors and level gauges – available in multi-reading versions – allow you to monitor freshwater, greywater and the fuel tank from the panel.

Valves, fittings and accessories

Drain valves, elbow fittings, couplings and antifreeze complete the water system. Choose fittings with a diameter corresponding to the pipes already installed; push-fit systems such as those from John Guest simplify tool-free installation. For winterisation, specific freshwater antifreeze and tank thermal insulation reduce the risk of frost damage.

Sinks and basins for motorhomes and vans

Stainless steel or thermoformed material sinks are chosen based on the space available on the worktop. Rectangular, oval and corner versions exist, with or without an integrated cabinet. Measure the opening of the worktop before ordering and check the depth of the basin in relation to the compartment below.

Domande frequenti
