Everything that manages and converts energy on board the camper: MPPT and PWM charge controllers, 12V/230V inverters, mains chargers, DC-DC converters and parallellers. The starting point for choosing is to understand from which source the battery is charged (solar, alternator or 230V mains) and what type of battery is on board.

How to choose an inverter, battery charger and MPPT controller for a motorhome

MPPT or PWM charge controllers

The charge controller sits between the solar panel and the battery. MPPT models extract more energy from the panel, especially in diffuse light or with high-voltage panels; PWM models are cheaper and suitable for simple systems. Victron Energy and Antarion offer both technologies, with versions equipped with Bluetooth for smartphone monitoring.

Inverting the current: modified or pure sine wave

An inverter converts the battery voltage to 230V AC to power household appliances. Pure sine wave inverters are compatible with any load, including motors, sensitive appliances and switching chargers. Modified sine wave models cost less but can cause problems with certain devices. The power rating should be chosen based on the most demanding appliance you want to power.

230V mains battery charger

When the motorhome is connected to the campsite charging point, the mains battery charger charges the leisure battery in a controlled manner. Multi-stage models extend the life of the battery and are compatible with the main chemistries: AGM, GEL and lithium LiFePO4. The brands available include Victron Energy with the Blue Smart IP22 and IP67 series, and Votronic.

DC-DC converters and battery combiners

The DC-DC converter charges the leisure battery from the vehicle's alternator, maintaining stable voltages and protecting both batteries. It is the preferred solution for vehicles with an intelligent variable-management alternator. The battery combiner performs a similar function with simpler logic, suitable for traditional systems. CBE offers specific solutions for lithium batteries.

Compatibility with the battery type

Before purchasing any charging device, check that it supports your battery's chemistry: AGM, GEL, lead-acid or lithium LiFePO4. The charging parameters differ for each technology. Votronic and Redarc offer models with selectable or preset charging profiles for lithium batteries.

Domande frequenti
