Mechanical and hydraulic steering systems, remote control cables, steering wheels, flaps and throttle controls for outboard and sterndrive engines, and electric steering units. To make the right choice, you need to know the type of steering system installed on board, the required length of the cable or hydraulic circuit, and compatibility with the engine or actuator.
How to choose steering wheels, cables and boat controls
The category includes everything that transmits commands from the pilot to the engine or to the control surfaces: throttle and shift cables, mechanical and hydraulic steering wheels, steering wheels, electric and hydraulic flaps, button panels and control units. The correct choice starts with the type of system already installed or to be installed from scratch.
Mechanical or hydraulic steering
Mechanical cable steering systems, such as the Ultraflex and Uflex rotary systems, are the most common solution on small and medium-sized outboard engines. Hydraulic systems, with a pump, pistons and flexible hoses, are suitable for high-powered engines or boats that require less effort at the helm. Before purchasing, it is necessary to check the type of control box on board and the length of the path between the dashboard and the engine.
Remote control cables: series and length
Remote control cables are identified by a code (C8, C14, C36, M58, M66, M90 and others) that indicates the series and cross-section, and by the length in feet or meters. The length is measured along the actual path of the cable, including curves, adding a small reserve. Different series are not interchangeable: it is always necessary to check the code of the original cable or that indicated by the control box manufacturer before ordering.
Steering wheels and steering wheels
Steering wheels differ by diameter, material and number of spokes. The most common sizes are 280, 350, 400 and 450 mm; a larger diameter reduces the effort required to maneuver. Available materials include polyurethane, teak and stainless steel. Before purchasing, it is essential to check the compatibility of the hub with the steering column cone already installed on board.
Flaps and actuators
Flaps regulate the longitudinal and transverse trim of the hull while sailing. Electric systems from brands such as Lenco, Bennett and Quick consist of actuators, a control panel and wiring; hydraulic ones require a dedicated control unit. The choice depends on the size of the hull, the number of flaps to be installed and the onboard voltage, with 12 V as the most common standard and 24 V on larger boats.
Dashboard controls and button panels
Single-lever or joystick controls manage throttle and shift from the driving position. Anchor windlass, maneuvering thruster and flap button panels integrate into the existing panel or are flush-mounted. It is necessary to check the supply voltage, the type of connector and the compatibility with the actuator or winch already on board.
