The onboard electrical system requires components certified for the marine environment: superinsulated copper cables, watertight switches, ANL and MEGA fuses, and 316 stainless steel sockets and terminals. The starting point is the cable gauge and the maximum circuit current, which determine the fuse type and switch size.

How to choose cables, sockets and switches for the onboard electrical system

Marine electrical cables: cross-section and insulation

Onboard, cables with tinned copper conductors and super-insulated PVC sheathing are used, resistant to moisture, fuels and vibrations. The cross-section is chosen based on the current drawn and the length of the circuit: an undersized cross-section causes voltage drops and risks of overheating. For power cables — batteries, starter motors, winches — the most commonly used cross-sections range from 16 to 50 mm². Ultraflex C-series flexible cables are among the most sought after for remote control and service circuits.

Fuses: type and amperage

The fuse protects the cable, not the load. The most common formats in boating are: ANL fuses (from 60 A up to 350 A and beyond) for protecting the main lines near the battery, high-capacity MEGA fuses, AMI/MIDI for intermediate circuits, ATO/ATC and glass for auxiliary circuits. Reference brands: Blue Sea Systems, Quick, Osculati. Multi-way fuse holders with LED indicator facilitate visual monitoring of the status of the circuits.

Switches and panels

Switches for marine use must be watertight or at least splash-resistant. They are available in on-off, on-off-on and magneto-hydraulic versions, the latter suitable for protecting circuits subject to repeated overloads without replacing a fuse. Electrical panels with four or six switches allow you to centralize the controls of the onboard services. For specific applications such as the anchor windlass, there are dedicated switches with directional control function.

Sockets and connectors

12V cigarette-type sockets are the most immediate format for powering portable instrumentation. For higher currents, high-amperage connectors with watertight contacts are used. Sealed USB-A and USB-C sockets, such as those from Scanstrut, allow the charging of devices even in the cockpit. For shore connection, European standard plugs and shore cables are available, such as the Cruiser line by Osculati and Marinco products.

Terminals and cable glands

Onboard terminals must be made of 316 stainless steel to resist marine corrosion: the most common formats are single and double, in various diameter sizes. Multi-terminal terminal blocks organize the connections in junction boxes. Roof or bulkhead cable glands, such as those from Uniteck, guarantee watertightness where cables pass through surfaces exposed to the elements.

Domande frequenti
