How to choose the right battery and charger for your motorcycle
Read the original battery code
The code printed on the installed battery (for example, YTX12-BS, YTZ7V, YB7L-B, 51913) contains all the necessary information: nominal voltage, capacity, and dimensions. Before looking for a replacement, write down that code: it is the most reliable reference for finding the compatible battery, regardless of the brand you choose as a replacement.
Technology: lead-acid, AGM, or lithium
Motorcycle batteries are divided into three main categories. Batteries with acid included (sealed and ready to activate) are the traditional solution, suitable for most vehicles. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are sealed and pre-activated at the factory, requiring no maintenance. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries offer reduced weight and a long shelf life: Skyrich offers a wide range with HJT/HJTX/HJTZ codes that correspond directly to equivalent lead battery codes. Before installing a lithium battery, check that the vehicle's charging system is compatible.
Voltage and capacity
Almost all modern road motorcycles operate at 12 V. Some vintage motorcycles or small scooters use 6 V batteries. The capacity in Ah and the cold cranking amps must be equal to or greater than the values of the original battery: it is not advisable to go below the rated values.
Chargers and battery tenders: choose by technology and use
TecMate Optimate is the benchmark for charging and maintenance: the range includes chargers for lead/AGM and models dedicated to lithium, available with SAE or DIN outputs. For motorcycles that remain in the garage for entire seasons, a battery tender with an automatic cycle is preferable. TecMate's SAE and DIN connectors (SAE-72, SAE-76, SAE-77 sockets) allow you to connect GPS devices, USB chargers, and other accessories directly to the battery permanently.
Brands and market positioning
Yuasa is the original supplier for many manufacturers and covers the widest range of lead battery codes. Energy Safe offers a lead and AGM alternative with good coverage of common sizes. Skyrich specializes in lithium with direct correspondence to traditional lead battery codes. TecMate, on the other hand, covers the entire range of charging, maintenance, and connection accessories.
