Le marche di Anchors and chains
Anchors, chains and anchoring accessories meet every need, from tenders to cruising boats. The starting point is the type of anchor best suited to the seabed and the boat's weight, paired with a properly sized chain of the correct section and the accessories needed to manage it on board.
How to choose an anchor and chain for your boat
The choice of anchoring equipment depends on three main variables: the type of seabed you usually encounter, the boat's displacement, and the anchor windlass system installed on board. These factors determine the type of anchor, its weight, and the size of the chain.
Anchor types: Danforth, Hall, Bruce, Delta, Epsilon and umbrella
Each type has a preferred range of applications. Danforth-type anchors (among the most sought after, available from a few kg up to over 25 kg) penetrate sand and mud well thanks to their flat flukes and can be dismantled for compact storage. Hall-type anchors are the classic choice for swinging moorings, robust and versatile. Bruce-type anchors hold on mixed bottoms and do not require dismantling. Modern profiles such as Delta, Epsilon and Lewmar's LFX are high-holding power fluke anchors, suitable for automatic windlasses because they enter the hawse without manual intervention. Umbrella anchors and Plastimo Kobra-type anchors fold and are practical as a backup anchor or for tending.
Anchor weight: how to choose
The recommended minimum weight increases with the boat's displacement and length. For the same length, a heavier boat or one sailing in exposed areas requires a heavier anchor or a type with greater holding power per kg. Always compare the manufacturer's selection tables before purchasing.
Chain: galvanized calibrated or 316 stainless steel
Calibrated chain is essential if using a windlass with a gypsy: the links must exactly match the gypsy's section. AISI 316 stainless steel chain resists corrosion in marine environments better than galvanized chain, at a higher cost; galvanized is more affordable and suitable for those who replace the chain regularly. Pairing the chain with a mooring rope with shackles of the corresponding diameter completes the system.
Accessories: chain marker, chain stopper and anchor swivel
The chain marker (such as the Osculati Chain Rainbow kit) allows you to read the length of the chain directly from the stern deck by coloring the links at fixed intervals. The AISI 316 stainless steel chain stopper holds the chain in position when the windlass is stationary. The anchor swivel joint prevents the chain from twisting during rotations on the seabed, extending the life of both the chain and the anchor.
Materials: galvanized steel, 316 stainless steel and aluminum
Galvanized steel is the standard and most widely used material due to its good cost-to-strength ratio. AISI 316 stainless steel is preferable for those who leave the anchor on board all year in saline environments. Aluminum alloy anchors such as the Fortress FX series offer high holding power with reduced weight, a solution appreciated on catamarans and fast boats where weight at the bow is critical.
