How to choose the water, gas and toilet components for your camper
A functional layout requires careful choices for each subsystem. The criteria vary depending on whether you are working on the water system, the gas system or the toilet compartment.
Water system: pumps, tanks and fittings
For the water system, you need to check that the pump's flow rate is compatible with the number of outlets, the tank's capacity in litres and the diameter of the fittings. Push-fit fittings, such as those from John Guest, simplify installation without welding. For tanks, it is worth considering a self-adhesive thermal insulation to protect the water from freezing in cold weather.
Water heater: heat exchanger, electric or dual-fuel
Camper water heaters are available in electric (powered by 230 V), heat exchanger (utilising the engine or central heating) and dual-fuel models. Truma and Pundmann offer the most widely available solutions on the market. Those who use their camper in marine environments or in converted vans can opt for marine-type water heaters, which are compact and feature standardised connections.
Gas system: pressure reducers, regulators and cylinders
The heart of the LPG system is the pressure reducer. GOK is the leading technical reference, offering single-stage and two-stage regulators and adapter sets for European cylinders. Always check that the pressure reducer's outlet pressure is compatible with the appliances installed on board. An upstream LPG filter protects valves and burners from condensation residue. For those travelling in Europe, kits with adapters for foreign filling points prevent refuelling problems.
Portable and chemical toilets: capacity and treatment
Portable Thetford toilets (Porta Potti series) are chosen based on the waste tank's capacity and the dimensions of the available space. Chemicals, such as Thetford Aqua Kem Blue or the concentrated green range, are used in both the waste and flush tanks; biological formulations are available for those using campsites with environmental restrictions. Flushable toilet paper (Thetford Aqua Soft, Fiamma) is essential to prevent the waste tank from becoming blocked.
Accessories and spare parts: how to find the right component
For spare parts — pressure reducer repair kits, diaphragms, seals, piston brackets — the original unit's code is always the best reference. Brands such as GOK, Truma and Fiamma publish technical documentation that helps identify the correct part. Filtering by product type and brand allows you to narrow down the selection quickly.
