How to choose VHF antennas, marine stereos and radios

VHF radios: fixed or portable

Fixed VHF radios are installed on the bridge, connected to an external antenna and the onboard power supply, ensuring greater transmission power. Portable versions — such as the Cobra Marine HH350 models or Plastimo radios — are battery-powered and useful as backups or on small boats: assess battery life and water resistance. Some models include an AIS receiver, such as the Raymarine AIS700 or Simrad RS40-B, adding the reception of nearby ship positions without separate devices.

VHF antennas: length and type

VHF antennas differ in length and gain. Shorter versions are suitable for sailboats where heeling is significant; longer ones increase range on motorboats. Glomex offers several stainless steel and fiberglass models — including Elba, Task and Black Swan — in various sizes. Scout and Banten cover more basic needs. For CB antennas, Scout offers specific models.

Coaxial cables and installation accessories

The coaxial cable directly affects antenna performance. Glomex's RG8X type is among the most sought-after, available in various lengths. To complete the installation, you need pipe or deck mounts — single or double-jointed in ABS — lightweight alloy extensions and splitters. The Glomex RA201 AM/FM/AIS splitter allows you to share the VHF antenna between the radio and the AIS receiver, reducing wiring.

Marine stereos and waterproof speakers

Marine stereos must withstand moisture, salt spray and vibrations: check the IP protection rating of the front panel. Fusion (Apollo and RA series) and Boss Marine cover most installations. Clarion completes the range for those looking for specific solutions. Waterproof speakers should be matched to the RMS power of the amplifier; some models include programmable LED lighting. Fusion and Boss Marine offer two-way units in various sizes.

Internet connectivity and digital TV antennas

4G/5G internet systems — such as Glomex weBBoat Plus 5G and weBBoat Link PRO — allow network access via a data SIM even far from the coast. Digital TV antennas pick up the DVB-T2 signal in the marina: check if the model includes a built-in amplifier and DAB support for digital radio. Glomex covers this range with models such as Ballade and the series with a built-in amplifier.
