Anchor windlasses include horizontal and vertical anchor recovery units, bow rollers, snubber lines, shock absorbers and electrical spare parts. To choose the right one, you need to start with the chain size, the onboard voltage (12 V or 24 V) and the power required depending on the weight of the anchor.

How to choose an anchor windlass for your boat

The anchor windlass is one of the most heavily stressed components on board: it must operate in wet conditions, under variable loads, and through repeated cycles. The choice depends on several precise technical parameters that should be evaluated before purchase.

Chain diameter and sprocket type

The sprocket is the toothed wheel that engages with the chain: it must exactly match the diameter and pitch of the installed chain. The most common sizes range from 6 to 12 mm. An incompatible sprocket causes dangerous slippage or jams. Always check the chain diameter before purchasing or replacing a sprocket. Some kits with a sprocket magnet allow you to obtain end-of-travel signals without structural modifications.

Supply voltage: 12 V or 24 V

The vast majority of pleasure boats operate at 12 V; 24 V is typical of larger boats where long wiring requires a higher voltage to limit voltage drops. Choose the voltage based on the existing system, also checking the cross-section of the connecting cables.

Power and pulling torque

The motor power (expressed in watts) determines the maximum pulling torque. Always consider the total weight of the anchor and chain as a starting point, taking into account the usual anchoring depth and operating conditions.

Orientation: horizontal or vertical windlass

Vertical windlasses house the motor below deck and take up less surface space; horizontal ones have the motor unit exposed and are better suited for installation on tenders or in confined spaces. The choice depends on the configuration of the anchor locker and the available space forward.

Bow roller and chain guide accessories

The bow roller guides the chain from the sprocket to the anchor, protecting the hull's edge. Available in stainless steel, it is rated by length and by compatibility with the type of anchor: plow, Bruce, CQR, or delta. The tilting version makes it easier to recover and secure the anchor on board. Essential accessories also include a chain damper, a thermal protection switch, and power cables of an adequate cross-section.

Spare parts: how to find the right component

For spare parts — sprockets, nylon pulleys, clutch release levers, magnet kits — you need to know the exact model of the windlass and, where applicable, the chain diameter. Brands such as Lofrans, Quick, Lewmar, and Osculati provide specific spare parts for each series: check the model code on the windlass label before ordering.

Domande frequenti
