Structural sealants, mechanical and electronic anti-theft devices, lights and materials for redoing the cell: three distinct areas covering the entire maintenance and protection of the camper. To get your bearings, the starting point is to understand whether you are working on the bodywork, the electrical system or active safety.

How to choose products for camper maintenance and safety

Sealants: which product for which surface

Sealants are among the most sought-after products in this sector. The choice depends on the surface to be treated and the type of stress: MS-polymer-based sealants, such as the Dekalin Dekasyl and Sikaflex lines, are suitable for structural joints and panels subject to vibration because they remain flexible even after curing. Products specifically designed for roofs and joints exposed to UV rays, such as Sikaflex 521 UV, resist direct sunlight better. For interior finishes and filling, more rigid sealants or foams are used instead. Always check the compatibility with the substrate (aluminum, fiberglass, veneered wood) indicated on the product data sheet.

Panels and materials for the living area

Veneered plywood and fiberglass are the most requested materials for repairing walls and floors of the living area. The thickness should be chosen based on use: thin sheets (3 mm) for lightweight cladding and linings, greater thicknesses (12-15 mm) for load-bearing structures and furniture bases. Roll-on fiberglass is recommended for restoring exterior walls and sandwich roofs.

Anti-theft devices and locks: mechanical or electronic blocking

Camper protection is divided into several levels. Mechanical locks for the towbar joint, such as those compatible with AL-KO systems, immobilize the vehicle without power. Reinforced locks for the cab, such as those from Thule and Zadi, protect the doors of the base van. Thitronik electronic alarms and systems with wireless sensors add a level of active surveillance for the living area. Evaluate whether you need protection for the towing system only, for the cab, or for the entire vehicle.

Gas detectors: types and placement

Gas leak detectors should be chosen based on the gases used on board (LPG, methane, CO) and the number of sensors required. Some models integrate multiple sensors for combined detection. The placement of the sensor varies depending on the gas: LPG is heavier than air and tends to sink, methane rises. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Lights and cab lighting

For lights and position lights, choose the type (LED or halogen) compatible with the existing circuit and check the nominal voltage, which on van-based campers is almost always 12 V. For the cab, mats and seat covers must be compatible with the base vehicle model: check the series and year of production before purchasing.

Domande frequenti
