Le marche di Stainless steel hardware
Stainless steel boat hardware includes everything needed for handling, mooring, outfitting, and maintenance: shackles, turnbuckles, snap links, thimbles, turnbuckles, fairleads, hinges, and fasteners. The starting point for choosing is the diameter of the wire rope or chain with which the component will work, followed by the type of steel required by the operating environment.
How to choose stainless steel hardware for marine use
In marine environments, hardware must withstand salt water, mechanical stress, and continuous exposure to the elements. Knowing the differences between product types and technical specifications helps prevent incorrect purchases and premature replacements.
316 stainless steel or another grade?
AISI 316 stainless steel is the standard for marine use: the presence of molybdenum makes it more resistant to chloride corrosion than AISI 304. For applications in direct contact with salt water, external mooring lines, or deck equipment, 316 is the correct choice. Galvanized iron is acceptable for land-based parts or temporary use, but not for permanent components in marine environments.
Diameter and working load
Each piece of hardware is sized according to its nominal diameter, which generally corresponds to the diameter of the cable, chain, or tie rod it is paired with. Shackles, swivels, snap links, and turnbuckles should be chosen so that the stated diameter is compatible with the cable or chain used. The breaking load and allowable working load are indicated in the product data sheets: never undersize hardware for safety applications.
Component type: shackles, swivels, snap links, turnbuckles, and tensioners
Shackles connect fixed or semi-permanent elements; they are available in straight, bow, long, and offset versions, each suitable for different connection geometries. Eye-to-eye or shackle-to-shackle swivels allow relative rotation between two elements, which is essential for halyards and sheet lines. Snap links allow for quick attachment: screw-lock models offer greater security against accidental opening, while models with a rotating eye reduce twisting of the cable. Male or female turnbuckles screw onto flat or threaded surfaces to create fixed anchor points. Eye-to-eye or fork tensioners adjust the tension on stays, bands, and tie rods.
Fasteners and small hardware
Stainless steel boat fasteners include self-tapping screws, metal screws, nuts, washers, and cotter pins. The choice of screw head type (flat countersunk, pan head, hexagonal) depends on the application and the desired appearance. Fasteners in blister packs are useful for keeping complete assortments on board for routine maintenance.
Hinges, thimbles, and special accessories
Stainless steel hinges with covers or booklet hinges are used on air vents, deck hatches, and compartments. Thimbles protect the cable eye from crushing at the connection point with shackles or turnbuckles: they should be chosen based on the diameter of the cable they accommodate. For monitoring stay tension, a professional tension meter is a specific tool to pair with rigging hardware.
