Electronics
Onboard electronics include navigation, communication, and monitoring: GPS and plotters for routing, VHF for communications, fishfinders, compasses, instruments, and antennas. To choose, start with the type of boat and its use—coastal cruising, offshore, or fishing—then check the compatibility of the network protocols (NMEA 2000, SeaTalkNG) among the instruments you already have. How to choose the right marine electronics for your boat
GPS, plotters and fishfinders
The chartplotter is the hub of your navigation electronics: consider the display size (in inches), brightness for use in the cockpit, and compatibility with the charts you use. Fishfinders differ by transducer frequency and usable depth; sport fishing or monitoring the seabed in shallow waters requires different features than offshore navigation. Garmin, Lowrance and Raymarine meet both needs with a wide range of products.
VHF radios and antennas
A VHF radio is mandatory safety equipment on many boats: choose based on power (handheld or fixed) and the presence of DSC. The VHF antenna affects range: consider the length (90 cm or longer Glomex antennas are common for fixed installations) and the type of connecting cable, such as RG8X coaxial cable. For remote installations, the extension and mounting base must be compatible with the antenna connector.
Instruments and compasses
Onboard instruments — fuel gauges, water level indicators, temperature gauges, voltmeters, hour meters — are chosen first and foremost by the sensor's resistance in ohms, which must match the instrument (the most common configurations are 240-33 Ohm and 0-180 Ohm). VDO and Osculati offer a wide range of tubular sensors and gauges. Plastimo and Riviera compasses differ in mounting (cockpit, wall-mounted, or for surveying) and compass rose graduations; for offshore navigation, consider models with high bubble stability.
Onboard networks and connecting cables
NMEA 2000 is the most widely used network protocol for connecting instruments, GPS, transducers and autopilots. A backbone with Micro-C connectors, T-junctions and terminators is required: Lowrance, Raymarine (with SeaTalkNG) and Garmin have dedicated accessories. Before purchasing cables or network kits, check which standard your already installed instruments use to avoid adapters.
Accessories and spare parts
For spare parts — power cables, trim rings, mounting kits, antenna extensions — identify the exact instrument series (e.g. Raymarine Element, VDO ViewLine, Garmin gWind) because accessories are not interchangeable between different series. The product code or full model listed on the instrument's nameplate is the most reliable reference for finding the correct part.
